The most important part of finding a job is what type of job you are looking for. Since you said you want to be in a teaching hospital, half the job is done. However, there are many different types of teaching hospitals such as University Hospitals, Community Hospitals etc. Also, do you want to be a hospitalist or Primary Care? The salaries depend on the area but recently, the pay for a hospitalist even in the North East has been good. Many of my friends are getting 160 K to 200K for a hospitalist job. Some of them are working 1 week on and 1 week off. So, where are you located and where do you want to be working? IF you do not mind moving, you probably will have plenty of choices. I am an internist myself and went through the process like you did! I
can understand how you feel. It is frustrating to see all these recruiters who get part of your salary for recruiting you, in a way! I hated that even though I do understand their role and some of them can really find the deal you are looking for. The way I did it was - I registered for free at NEJM jobs at NEJM.org. I posted my CV there, and I applied to the programs I found interesting. One can choose to avoid the recruiters in that search, if you wish. Funny part was, I got a call from this guy - who has a hospitalist company in Texas and is an internist himself, who happened to be my old classmate in medical school. I have not been in touch in the last few years and he did not mention his name on the job advertisement. We had been in contact since, I went to his marriage and all. Ofcourse, I did not take up that job since I decided to stay in Pennsylvania. So, try NEJM, call around the hospitals you are interested in and you will get a lot of calls. Also, you can go to some of these job fairs organized by CareerMD and others. You can check on their website for that. Good luck!
