Facts regarding preliminaries and transitional! *****
Dear Friends,
Every now and then I see people having numerous questions about the preliminary or transitional year programs.
I will try to answer few facts regarding the above: What is a preliminary year?
Preliminary year is a one year program in Internal medicine or surgery and sometimes in FP Why preliminary year?
Those who are interested in specialities like anesthesiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, radiology, otolaryngology etc are usually the ones who apply to preliminary year. How can I look for preliminary medicine on FREIDA?
1.Choose IM/surgery
2. Click on optional criteria and choose"programs offering prelim year" Is it tough for IMGs to get a spot in preliminary position?
It is a bit tougher than categorical IM /Surgery for the following reasons:
1. You are competing with highly competitive applicants.
2. There are lesser positions available for preliminary than categorical. What is the difference between preliminary/transitional? Preliminary year is totally dedicated to either medicine or surgery.
Transitional year consists of rotation in various departments What about transitional year?
I think this is the most competetive amongst all the first year positions.
1.AMGs prefer transitional year
2.Fewer programs sponsor visas Is it impossible to get a prelim/transitional position?
Not at all,the criterias are same as that for the categorical programs, apply to higher number of programs,be confident about the speciality that you wish to pursue later on. Will a prelim/transitional year program sponsor J1/H1 for me?
Yes,they will, even if you want a H1 If you have any other questions feel free to ask! Serenity
