Dress code

By nonstopdoc1 - Posted on 15 May 2005

Hi guys, I may sound a n00b here but I was just wondering what's the usual dress code for residents. Especially Internal Medicine.
Are there any specific or general guidelines we have to follow. Do we have to wear a tie everyday considering the fact that where I am going, summers are quite warm. Also do we have to wear leather dress shoes only and no sneakers and regarding pants can we wear the khakis (e.g. dockers) or do we have to wear only the usual dress pants colors like black and grey etc. I don?t think they allows jeans Or Tees or do they ? ;) Also what rotations are scrub suits for?

Do we have to wear a tie everyday considering the fact that where I am going, summers are quite warm.[/i] Yes, not only residents but almost everybody who works in the hospital has to follow some dress codes. Wearing a tie is expected except on weekends at most programs. Hospitals are airconditioned and wearing a tie does not neccessarily make you feel warm inside the hospital. Leather shoes are worn if you are in your formal dress and not in scrubs. If you are on call, you can wear scrubs and other shoes.

Not usually rotation based but call based for medical specialties. If you are on call especially in the units (ICU/CCU), you will wear scrubs. Dress codes change from hospital to hospital even though most will follow the above general rules. You can check the programs website or with them for their specific dress codes. You will get to know these in orientation. GL. To get a sense -
