how should i go on for a surgery residency
Hello,
I am an FMG with a green card status, completed my MBBS from India in 2005, I have got 99/263 in Step 1 and have to get my scores for step 2.
I have no USCE nor any research experience.
But I have the patience and determination to spend 1-2 years doing research and getting US clinical experience via a prelim year in order to get into a Good University Program for surgery.
What should be my approach?
Right now I am looking for observership/externship over here in New York.
Is it very tough to enter the surgical field.
Thank You
Sharvil

I dont know ur source of info about prelim positions and categorical positions but let me tell u something from experiance.
Firstly it is easier to get prelim surg (dont confuse this with prelim medicine) than cat surg.Like a pd put it to me hosp dont think fmg's r meant to do cat surg u have to work ur way up through prelim.
Secondly ...yes it has become easier for img to get surg but like i said after doing prelim surg even with scores like 99/99/90.
Best of Luck.
Based on your step 1 score of 99, I presume that you would score similarly in step 2. If you have both scores in the 90's, I do not see any problems in getting into Surgery. While USCE and Research may add, you do not need to spend 2 years for them and they are not obstacles to get into residency really as there are many programs that do not require them. Research is not a program requirement as such. You said you have the patience and determination to get USCE and Research experience via prelim years. First of all, prelim year is not meant for research, and second of all, it is much tougher to get prelim than categorical in General. So, I would aim for categorical Surgery, and FMG's are getting surgery residencies these days. One of friends recently got into Surgery with no USCE. GL!
You can do it, we can help!
