Dear Resident Applicant: Thank you for your interest in our residency program in surgery at the Guthrie/Robert Packer Hospital located in Sayre, PA. The residency program in General Surgery selects seven graduating seniors each year. Three are selected for the categorical five-year program; the other four are accepted for the one-year, designated preliminary program. The junior house staff in General Surgery consists of a total of 19 residents. These residents have graduated from a variety of medical schools including Georgetown University, Albany Medical College, Medical College of Virginia, the State University of New York (Syracuse), Hahnemann University and many others. They have chosen the Guthrie/Robert Packer Hospital for their residency training because of the excellent clinical training opportunities and the superb quality of life of the region. Rotations in surgery include: General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Urology, Pediatrics, Transplant, Plastic Surgery, Gynecology, and Endoscopy rotations. The hospital is staffed almost exclusively by the Guthrie Clinic physicians whose specialist members have large referral practices. Because these physicians are geographically full time, they are able to devote much of their time to graduate medical education. They make daily work/teaching rounds with the residents and participate in the daily specialty rounds and conferences. In most cases, we match our categorical positions with U.S. medical school graduates, but we offer the opportunity to foreign medical school graduates to participate in our program. We consider foreign medical school graduates who have taken the USMLE and scored in the 80th percentile or higher. They must also have obtained a position for the following year in another specialty such as Radiology or Anesthesia, and have verification of that acceptance. In addition, all FMG?s must be ECFMG certified at the time of the interview. Please note that all applicants for all General Surgery residencies will be asked to participate through ERAS - the Electronic Residency Application Service. We will NOT accept paper applications. Please feel free to visit our website: http://www.guthrie.org/Residency/GeneralSurgery/
or to call me at my toll free number (888) 300-2344 if you have any questions. Sincerely,
Laura Warner
