program change

By Namrata - Posted on 27 November 2005

hi
I am an IMG appearing for interviews this yr. i am ECFMG certified and have appeared for my step3, results awaited. I have no US clinical exp. suppose i accept whatever residency i get this yr, maybe in a community hosp, then will it be easier for me to change next yr as a PGY-1 to a better hosp given the fact that I would have US hands on exp also next yr?or will it even more difficult for me next yr to change? Thnx in advance.
Namrata.
Hi,
While technically you can, it is not easy to convince the programs why you are leaving this program. And you may have to repeat the intern year which you would hate to repeat! And your chances of going to YALE or so from a community program are not that great just because you have some USCE. Overall, while it is possible, it is a risky thing and my best suggestion is to go for the best that you can get this year! Unless you are not happy for some reason at the program you join, you should not jumpship for seemingly a better program!
