L2 to J1

By Anonymous - Posted on 30 June 2007

hi,
i am on L2 visa (dependant of a L1 holder). i am planning for the 2009 match and by then i would have completed 4 years in L2 visa. i understand that max duration of stay on a J1visa for a medical resident is 7 yrs. what i need to know is, would the 4 yrs that i have already stayed in US be counted if i switch to J1 making the max duration of stay on J1, 7-4=3 yrs? some one pls help me clarify this.
thanks in advance
Hi,
The 7 years for J1 will be independent of L2 duration. SO, you do not need to worry. You may, however, want to try for H1 which is better in many respects since you do not have the home req. on H1.
