Change from FM to IM

By Anonymous - Posted on 20 August 2007

I am doing my 1st yr FM and want to switch to IM as I want to move closer to my family and not really liking FM as I feel incomplete. i dont have great scores and not completed step3 as I failed. planning to retake soon. pl help me how to go about and how to inform my PD though he is a veryyyyyyy nice guy I am worried as to how to approach. I have a very good name in the dept as a very efficient and hard working intern. Any advise and light on this issue is highly appreciated.
thanks andd good luck
Hi,
It is not an uncommon situation. People change specialties all the time for various reasons and it is OK. Your contract is for 1 year and most programs do understand people change their minds. So, be honest say what you really want to do. If they like you, they will wish the best for you and do not make any issue out of it. Legally, you can leave without any problems after the 1 year contract is fulfilled. Having said that, if job is important for you, secure another residency first before you give this up, especially if you do not have good scores etc. And you can always do an elective in a place you like to do future residency and get to know the people there. All the best.
