OBGYN match application overview: what is important

By Anonymous - Posted on 03 April 2008

Graduate of 2006 from India. USMLE scores of 93/94/80 and USCE (10 months), research experience in ObGyn, no home country residency experience in OB! I applied to 70 OB programs, interviewed at 12 OB programs and got an Ob/Gyn spot in this match. My advise for the ObGyn aspirants. The big things for getting a good no. of interview call in OB for the fresh graduates are
1. USMLE score (higher the better, but mid-high 90's are always a big plus)
2. USCE and VERY STRONG US LOR's from well know faculty in Ob/Gyn
3. Once you get descent no. of interviews, then its your interview skills which gets you into the system!! Other important parts in your application:
1. Deans letter (since OB does not have many IMG residents, the faculty and the program director have a very little or no info regarding our medical education)
2. Personal statement (V V imp!, show ur hard core inspiration and passion for OB). PLEASE DO NOT WRITE THAT YOU WANT TO DO A FELLOWSHIP, BECAUSE >50% OF THE PROGRAMS WE INTERVIEW DO NOT HAVE FELLOWSHIPS AND THE PD's WOULD THINK WE WONT CONSIDER THEM VERY HIGHLY JUST BECAUSE OF THIS REASON!! BETTER WRITE THAT YOU SEE YOURSELF WORKING AS GENERALIST!
3. Research is always a good thing on ur application. You would have some topic to discuss on the interview day and show your research skills and OB has huge research opportunities, so most of the PD's (except the ones from very busy, small community programs) like the research part.
4.Post interview follow up! better go for a second look if you really liked the program
5. If you just want to do OB, better apply for a back up like Family medicine! I think you can practice OB and later do high risk OB fellowship after the FM residency! The unmatched rate of IMG's in OB is between 50-60 % every year, so work hard to accomplish your goals and better prepared for the worst thing! REMEMBER, HARD WORK ALWAYS PAYS OFF!!CONTINUE YOUR STRONG EFFORTS.
6. Home country experience is always good!!
7. If you get <5 interviews, better go for a prematch in any of the programs which offers one unless you are a high aspirant of an academic program which is high on research!! good luck everyone!! ObGyn is an excellent speciality, never give up even before starting!! If you are a hard core OB person like me, better go for an observership and/or research and never give up! I got it, you also deserve the same !! Anju :D
thanks anju for the list u have put up and the details of the requirements for obgyn
