j1 and fellowship

By hippo - Posted on 07 July 2008

Hi Prab,
In a previous post, you had told me that its possible to do residency and fellowship on the same J1 visa. Now here are my doubts..
1.When should I be applying for fellowships? During residency or after completion of residency?
2.Would it be possible to stay in the U.S on J1 if there is a gap between completion of residency and commencement of fellowship?
3. Could you please give me some details regarding application for fellowship for a resident on J1 visa.
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
The J1 visa is for 7 years. So, in that time frame, you can continue your residency and fellowship. If you have gap, you would need a J1 waiver job to continue to remain in the country. If you get a J1 waiver job, that would also be the basis for applying for a green card and you may not need to go out of the country for 2 years as required without the waiver. However, since there are more people seeking J1 waiver jobs than there are jobs available, there is about 50 percent chance of not finding a waiver job. So, your best bet still is H1. J1 is kind of like a backup or plan B. As for the process, you may want to google it. If you are more spesific, I can elaborate on that part of the process. All the best.

Thanks Prab! Im on L2 now and by 2009 june I'd have stayed on L2 for 3.5 yrs which would leave me with hardly enough time for completion of residency.Thats why I'm planning for J1 and I hope to do a fellowship on the same J1. I hear that application for fellowships begin by the 2nd yr of residency and the match results would be known before the final yr. Is the application process and match similar as the one for residency?
Thanks
Hi,
I understand the situation. IF you plan carefully, I think you would be fine. Make sure you know what specialty you want to go into early on and start doing electives and some research in that field in order to improve your chances. Fellowships are all about contacts, networking and research. ALL the best.

prab, please pardon my ignorance..i had a few doubts..
1.do community programs in general provide electives/research opportunities..if not how can a resident in a comm program do these? .
2.when would be the best time to take up electives/research while doing residency?
thanks
Yes, the electives are rotations in residency that you can choose whatever you want to do and you can choose where you want to do the rotation. I mean, you can do it at another hospital, university or even in a different country in some cases. You will know these things once you start doing your residency as to where to do certain electives. All the best.
