Hi, Time is flying by,
What would you advice on a personal statement for a Psychiatry Residency:
I was 18, took friendship in a wrong group of people at college, went on a joyride, got pulled over, there was a gun in the car (in the state I live in if there is a gun in the car and is not license to one person then everyone is liable), got arrested, freaked out by being worried my parents (who are Indian) would find out, signed a statement, spent time in jail, and met some interesting people, got bailed out (by my parents), fought a long and expensive battle in the court system, but ended up pleaing for a lessor charge.
16 years later...
I got an undergraduate degree from an Ivy League School, worked for a major pharmaceutical company for 6 more years, decided to go back to Medical School and now during my Psychiatry Rotation, I met people very similar to the ones I met when I was young in that system. And I was like hey, I can relate, all is not lost, I can help...
My question is, do you think I should mention this in my personal statement? Or am I opening up a can of worms?
Best Wishes...

Hi,Frankly, things like this
Hi,
Frankly, things like this tend to scare some programs and better not put it in personal statement. You can, however, mention your interest in meeting people with unique experiences, people with psychiatric issues etc. You should take a look at some of the personal statements online like medfools below
http://www.medfools.com/personalstatements/residency/psychiatry/
Come up with a story but do not have to include things that may potentially work against you. All the best.
