my chances after my EAD got void

Hi Prab,
An unfortunate thing has happened to me.My EAD got denied and now I need a H1b visa. Can I apply to programs on H-4 visa? What should I put the answer for the question in ERAS-Expected visa??

What are my chances for IM Match with the following?
usmle step 1 - 87 (1st attempt)
usmle step 2ck - 85(2nd attempt)
cs - pass(1st attempt)
Graduation year- 2004
Need - H1b
step3 - dec2008

Can you please give the pros and cons for applying J1?
Thanks.

Hi, As far as the EAD

Hi,
As far as the EAD cancellation is concerned, that should not affect much in terms of your chances to get into residency. The only thing is, you would have to apply for those programs that sponsor visas. Your attempt is an issue but it is not impossible to get into residency. Try to get some US LOR's, do observerships etc.

For H1, you need to have passed step 3 for most programs to consider your application seriously. If you are willing to go for J1, you may get better response in terms of interview calls. Make sure you check program requirements and concentrate on the IMG friendly programs.

J1 is not a bad choice, you have 7 years on it, you can even do a fellowship and after all that is done, can stay here if you can get a waiver job. US needs physicians and I am sure they will have more J1 opportunities in the future. A lot of inner city hospitals are now J1 waiver eligible and the chance of getting a waiver is 50 percent as of now. I would give it a shot!

Also, try to get a good personal statement, take step 3 as soon as you can but do not fail in it. Even if were to go next match after passing step 3, being in this years match will help you learn some of the things in the process. You will need to be persistent and you will make it. All the best.

Hi, If you are looking for

Hi,
If you are looking for H1, most programs do not consider your application seriously without step 3. Also, I meant that your chances are maximized only with step 3 and if were to take it in december, it may be a bit late for many programs even though some programs will rank you if pass step 3 by rank order deadline. With an attempt, and not passing step 3 needing h1 make it a bit tough but not impossible. Try to take step 3 earlier, if possible without risking another attempt. Many IMG's plan the exams hoping that, if they get the results by rank order or match, they will be OK. Unfortunately, most programs do want to have all the steps passed for granting interviews. I did not mean to discourage you, however. Your scores are decent and if have a good PS and apply to the right programs, you can get matched. All the best.
