license for job

By hardonian - Posted on 23 October 2008

Hi
i am looking for an internal med job in new york on an h1. so anybody familiar with nyork system plz answer this.
1)the license requirements on nyork's web site says that to get a license on an h1 visa , you have to either work in an underserved area, or work under the supervision of a physician in a hospital/nursing home /psychiatric hospital .. Is that really true or is there a loophole that I don't know about. Given that there are so many imgs doing residencies in newyork this seems counterintitutive.
2) during residency h1 does not come under the cap, but if we work for a" for profit practice "does our h1 now fall under the cap .
thanks
Hi.
You do not need to work in any underserved area or under supervision of anybody for H1. That is for J1. You will have plenty of opportunities for work after residency. Hospitalist jobs are pretty decent paying upwards of 150k for internists. You can register for free on Nejm for jobs and apply for any jobs. It is free. As for H1 quota, yes, if you work for a for profit organization, you need to go through the quota system which is abit tricky since there are only a limited H1's every year and you may or may not get it. However, most hospitals are not for profit and you can still cont. on H1 without needing to worry about the quota. Thanks and all the best.
