Many IMG's do not realize how important a personal statement is to the overall application. While I was a resident, I asked my residency program coordinator what makes her to call somebody for an interview and whether scores is all that matters. She said a good score can only get her to open the file. If the guy has good scores, but a poor personal statement, she does not even bother to call the guy for the interview. If both scores and PS are good, she then does a phone interview to see if the personal is knowledgeable by asking general questions. If she is satisfied, she calls them for the interview.
