Eugene Wright, 66, has plead guilty to child rape and was sentenced to 123 months to life in prison.
Wright was a volunteer at the Big Foot Head Start Childcare Center on the Spokane Community College Campus. He admitted to sexually assaulting a 5 year-old girl during her naptime on August 12, 2010. Wright said he touched the child, and made her put her hands on him. He also told detectives that he made children sit on his lap, and rubbed their arms, legs, and backs.
Wright was also a volunteer at the East Central Community Center Head Start program, however no complaints were filed against Wright from that facility.
Wright applied for the Foster Grandparent position through Catholic Charities and was paid a stipend for his work, which involved playing and reading to children between 4 and 9 -years -old.
Wright was arrested in September 2010 on first-degree child rape and first-degree child molestation, after an extensive investigation by Detective Stephanie Barkley and other criminal justice partners.
Catholic Charities said they performed a background check on Wright and did not find anything. KREM 2 news did a background check on Wright and discovered he had been found guilty of resisting arrest in 1996, and had been charged with fourth-degree assault and obstructing an officer, but those charges were dropped.
