Follow up letter that I used after applying via ERAS

By Anonymous - Posted on 05 July 2004

Here is the format I used to send a follow up letter to the programs after applying via ERAS. You can change, add or modify based on your needs and this serves as an example. Dear Dr. ----MD, My name is Prab R. Tumpati and I am an ECFMG certified international medical graduate very much interested in joining your Internal Medicine Residency Program. I have sent my application through ERAS and my AAMC/ERAS id is -----------. I have passed the USMLE steps 1, 2 and 3 with scores of ---, ---, and --- respectively. Currently, I assist Dr.---------- in exploring the genetic basis of Migraine Headache using PCR at the department of Neurology of the University of -------------. Intrigued by the possibility of analyzing uman brain in 3 dimensions, I also assist Dr. ---------------in mapping the Dorsolatereal Prefrontal cortex[DLPFC] in subjects with Schizophrenia at the --------------. I graduated from -------- in
March --- with an M.B.;B.S. degree (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery). After graduating from my medical school, I took several courses at the University of ----. After having passed several language and medical board examinations, I had worked as a medical doctor in the country of ---- for a few years before coming to the United States. I am very much interested in your program as I believe that your program offers a broad-based clinical exposure in an interactive and academically stimulating environment. In addition to a comprehensive experience in general internal medicine, your program also provides me an opportunity to develop the intellectual and personal attributes necessary to promote professional growth and develop the skills necessary for lifelong learning. I believe that I will benefit greatly from a residency training at your program and in return, I will contribute to the program with my experience, enthusiasm, and my pleasing manners. I will be calling your office in a few days with the
hope of finding an interview so that I can further demonstrate what I can offer. While I am aware that there are many well qualified candidates, I am positive that I will prove myself worthy of it. Thank you very much for your time and any consideration you may give me. Sincerely yours,
Prab R. Tumpati

Most you post this letter by mail,or you can send it to their respective fax numberS?
Dr Prab,
Do we send a paper follow up and thankyou letter or does it have to an e mail letter.
Thanks for the good work you are doing in helping us IMG's
thanks a lot for your promt reply!
Sure, you are most welcome! One advice to all the applicants!
Start Early and Keep in constant touch with programs until you hear a positive or negative answer from the programs! Do not leave them until they say yes or no, not to mean bother them but politely follow it up by calling or by emails - once in every 5-6 weeks. Some tips about the Interviews
Study their website and be thorough with everything there. Find out the key people in the program and go to Freida Physician search and find out where they went to medical school, residency etc. Call the Program Coordinator and see if you may know who would be your interviewer since most programs send that info in advance and do a PUBMED search on any research articles they wrote and read the abstracts. The more you learn about them, the better it is! How many interviews are minimum!
The minimum number of interviews is about 8 to stand a reasonable chance to get matched. Ofcourse, people do get matched with less number of interviews and do not get matched with more but 8 is the statistical average. However, in my opionion, above 10 is safe. But if you have, let us say 25 interviews, I would say attend atleast 15 of them, better safe than be sorry! Cluster your interviews so that you cover many in that region in one visit. You can reschedule as needed to help reduce repeated travels to the same area and programs will try to accomodate as much as they can. Good luck!
In letter asking about residency requirements should we adress Program director by name like "Dear Dr. WWWW," or just "Dear Program Director"?
It will appear a lot better if you address them by the name, Dear Dr. X .. Y... Using general terms like Program Director will not impress them and you may not hear from them. Good luck!

Dr. Prab, thank you very much! t555
One suggested format for sending to programs asking for info! You need to individualize based on your requirements. Change what ever needs to be changed but this is a format that I used and it worked for me. I would address it to the program director even though the coordinator answers usually! Dear Dr. X Y. Z, MD Who you are!
I am a graduate of (Your school or FMG) interested in your --- (specialty) Residency Program. I passed the USMLE board examinations with scores of --- and --- in Steps 1 and 2 respectively. I have also passed the CSA examination in ---. I have a few years of Clinical Experience in ---. Your story in a nutshell, if you will!
Example: After graduating from --- Medical College in ----, I went to the country of --- in order to further my medical education. Learning a new language and practicing medicine in a new culture was both challenging and exciting. I had to learn about 50,000 words in a new language in order to communicate and function as a medical professional. The language sounded like a song initially but it did not take a long time before I found myself singing this song of ---- language. My experience in the health system of --- made me realize how a socialized medicine was utilized to achieve one of the best health standards in the world. It also exposed me to practicing medicine in the hi-tech environment in sharp contrast to where I come from. Express interest in the program
I am very much interested in your --- residency program as I believe that your program (reasons like variety of patients with a myriad of disease processes. In addition, the learning environment you create and your feedback to the residents on a regular basis helping them to realize their skills and suggesting areas for improvement will be of tremendous help for the residents. Your questions
Can you please take a moment and answer these questions for me? (Any questions like minimun requirements, visas etc.) Closing
I believe that my extensive interaction with a diverse group of patient populations in ---- would add a different perspective to your program. In addition to my clinical experience, I have also developed other skills such as organizational, interpersonal, and computer skills, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team and the experience of working with diverse groups of people. Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to the possibility of working with you in the future. Sincerely, Prab R. Tumpati
