How to apply for step 3?

By obak - Posted on 16 August 2004

hello prab,
i am an IMG preparing for the match 2005 application and was just wondering of how to apply for step 3? i am in NY right now and i tried to gather info including calling the NY Educ. Dept. concerning this and they say part of the requirement to be eligible to take step 3 is a COMPLETED RESIDENCY TRAINING ? so how do i go about this? is there any other state that lets IMG take step 3 without completing the residency training and how do i apply if ever there is one? thanks obak
to Prab, can an IMG apply for Step 3 USMLE without being undergone training in USA. THe FSMB state requirement says at least 2 years post grad ACGME training for IMGs in almost all states. I'll appreciate your response. Thanks
must one have both step 2 CK and CS completed before it becomes possibleto apply for step 3? I have finished both steps 1 and step 2 CK but my CS is scheduled in december and i want to take step 3 if it is possible.
Hi,
In short - YES! You not only need steps 1 and step 2 cs and ck, you also need to be ECFMG certified!

hi! thanks for the info, it sure does help to know. what review materials you can suggest to prepare for step 3? i'm on a low budget right now so i'm just wondering if self-study will do?
more power to you, and with all the help people get from you, no wonder you are succeeding in your career and life in general. obak
Hi, if you have recently taken step 2, you can prepare on your own with some books. Check the Aster's Notes for USMLE step 3 available on this website which also lists the books. http://www.residentscafe.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=list_pages_categories&cid=5 Also, find some study partner in your area to discuss CCS cases and do some combined study. It helps a lot! Good luck!

you do not have to call the boards or worry about it. Most IMG's use Connecticut and you do not need any prior training for that. Just go to FSMG website and download the application. In that application, they will ask you which state and you say CT. The requirements vary based on the state and you choose those states that you meet the requirements. For ex. for CT requires that you must complete USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3 within seven years of passing first exam. Most apply in CT, for some reason. The fees vary a little bit but that is not an issue. It is very simple, no need to worry! Visit FSMB.org for more info!
