September 1, 2004 Dear Residency Applicant: We received your recent inquiry regarding our Residency Training Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Lyndon Baines Johnson General Hospital, and we sincerely thank you for your interest. We have prepared this letter to acquaint you with our program and look forward to receiving your completed application. Our program was established in 1990 out of a need to provide service to a large indigent population on the north side of Houston. Our obstetrics and gynecology residency training program is under the direction of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. The Chairman, Larry C. Gilstrap, III, M.D., appoints the program director (currently Edward R.Yeomans, M.D.) to oversee the residency. All faculty are full time employees of the University of Texas Health Science Center. The program is fully accredited by the Resident Review Committee (RRC) and the Hospital by JCAHO. The many changes in availability of and access to medical care throughout the United States have not reduced our large patient population. The program offers a graduated learning experience for resident education with the faculty actively participating in resident supervision 24 hours a day. All residents graduating from the program will be capable of providing excellent, cost-effectives comprehensive health care to women. The program meets or exceeds the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. We accept five candidates from a pool of 200-300 applicants and 100 interviewees annually, for a total of 20 residents. Each resident is expected to complete four years of training. The Hospital The hospital was constructed in 1988 and is one of two hospitals operated by the Harris County Hospital District to provide health care services to the indigent population of the County. Located on the northeast side of Houston, it is approximately 15 minutes from the Texas Medical Center and about a 30 minute drive from each of the two major airports serving the city. Also at LBJ are residents and faculty from anesthesia, emergency medicine, family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, radiology and surgery (all from the University of Texas). Ambulatory Care Our residency is fortunate to have a flourishing Women?s Health Center. This ambulatory care center is conveniently located on the same floor as our in-patient facility, providing continuity-of-care service for 90-140 women per day (approximately 40% gynecology). UT faculty are present in each clinic and guide the decisions of the residents with emphasis on allowing the chief residents to develop the requisite skills of an independent practitioner. The residents have their continuity patients scheduled as in a private practice while also gaining the benefits of group practice. Residency Applicants
September 2, 2004 In-patient Care Due to the large volume of patients seen in the Women?s Health Center and an even larger number which are referred to the hospital from neighboring community clinics, the residents at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital are able to maintain three general OB/GYN services. These services, each led by one or two faculty, function as independent group practices and allow the residents a continuity-of-care experience between the out-patient and in-patient facilities. There is a variety of complicated obstetric and gynecologic cases including pelvic floor reconstruction, challenging hysterectomies and forceps deliveries. The Birth Center is a 20 bed Labor/Delivery/Recovery suite with immediate access to operating rooms. A computer room/library containing textbooks, journals and access to numerous computerized informational services is immediately available for physician usage. The ACGME work hours restrictions were implemented on July 1, 2003 and changes were made in the resident rotation schedule to accommodate these restrictions. Other Affiliated Hospitals Memorial Hermann Hospital is a full service general care hospital of approximately 495 beds. This hospital is the primary teaching hospital for the other residency program under the supervision of the department of OB/GYN at the University of Texas at Houston. The hospital and affiliated clinics provide care for a broad-based cross section of patients. The diverse population is comprised of Medicaid patients, HMO patients and private patients. Approximately 10% of the patients are charity or non-funded. There is a busy Maternal and Fetal Special Care Unit to which our 2nd year residents rotate for one month, as well as a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Life Flight helicopters transport maternal and fetal patients from across the State to Memorial Hermann Hospital. M.D. Anderson Hospital and Cancer Center is one of the largest cancer centers in the world. The 514-bed hospital is capable of seeing 1500 ambulatory care patients per day. This tertiary referral center is located in the Texas Medical Center. Residents rotate to this facility for 2 months during the 3rd year of residency. Memorial Southwest and Northwest Hospitals are large private hospitals each with about 500 beds. Residents rotate to each hospital for one month during the 3rd year of residency where they participate in the surgical management and post-operative follow-up of gynecological patients. Our program in Obstetrics and Gynecology has sufficient clinical material to ensure technical competence and the development of judgment and skill. We have an active teaching component, excellent attending staff coverage and ample didactic conference and weekly seminar sessions for residents. In addition to the experience gained through direct patient care, the residents at LBJ are provided with the following learning opportunities: 1. Weekly lectures primarily given by the faculty based on the learning objectives of the Council on Residency Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Special topics include pathology, risk management, ethics health care systems, contract negotiation and quality assurance.
2. Weekly case discussions.
3. Weekly fetal monitor interpretation conferences.
4. Monthly morbidity and mortality conferences.
5. Monthly journal club with residents, fellows and faculty in a casual setting.
6. Rotations with general medicine, family medicine and emergency medicine with attendance at conferences by those departments.
7. Opportunities for basic science and clinical research.
Residency Applicants
September 2, 2004 We are accepting applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and information regarding ERAS is enclosed. Because residency positions are competitive, an interview is a prerequisite for acceptance. Upon receipt of your completed application and other necessary documents, the Residency Selection Committee will review your file and, if selected for interview, you will be notified by mail, e-mail or by telephone with instructions for arranging a time convenient to you. An invitation for an interview does not automatically reserve an interview slot for you. Interview slots are limited and fill quickly. Exact dates have now been finalized; interviews are scheduled for November 19th, December 3rd and December 10th, 2004, with one make-up day on January 14, 2005. Our deadline to receive applications is October 31, 2004. We require a minimum of 3 letters of recommendation in addition to the Dean?s letter (one letter should be from your Department Chairman). For further information call Joyce Hayes, Residency Coordinator, at (713) 566-5735 or email: Joyce.Hayes@uth.tmc.edu. We wish you good luck in your pursuit of a quality training program. If you encounter any problems in the application process, please feel free to contact Dr. Yeomans (713-566-5509) or Dr. Hollier (713-566-4545) directly, and we will be happy to assist you. Respectfully yours, Edward R. Yeomans, M.D. Lisa M. Hollier, M.D.
